Respiratory Therapy 2023 and Beyond: Big Challenges - Bigger Opportunities
10/25/22
Speaker
Patrick J. Dunne, MEd, RRT, FAARC
Target Audience
This activity is intended for respiratory therapists, respiratory therapy students and all other healthcare practitioners seeking to have a better understanding of pulmonary specific concepts, disease process and therapeutic standards.
Overview
Due to COVID, respiratory therapists are now (and will continue to be) widely recognized for the life-saving skills provided in the pulmonary-critical care setting. However, questions are now being raised about our role in providing care to non-critical hospitalized patients, most notably care that is considered by many to be routine and customary. Such “low-value care” provides little or no clinical benefit, yet is pervasive throughout health care.
This presentation will review the forces at work to transform how respiratory care productivity, quality and cost-effectiveness should be measured, with specific emphasis on what this entail for the traditional practice of respiratory care.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
- Describe the limitations of the traditional fee-for-service payment model that relies on billable procedures as the primary metric for productivity
- List the advantages of using care pathways, supported by high-level clinical evidence, to achieve desirable clinical and economic outcomes
- Discuss various ways that RTs can help the profession transition to the newer emphasis on care that is patient-centric, evidence-based, value-driven and cost justifiable.
